Book the buddha and his teachings venerable narada mahathera
A clear, detailed introduction to the basic teachings of Buddhism available in English, this book explains concepts and doctrines which form the common bedrock of all schools of Buddhism as they have been preserved by the oldest living Buddhist tradition. The beginning of this resource is devoted to the life of the Buddha and leads into the Buddha’s teachings. The final chapters show the continuing relevance of Buddhism to the problems of human life today.

A most excellent book, The Amitabha Buddhist Society. This is my first dealing with that organization, but I’m impressed. They’re essentially selling this book for the cost of postage, which is only right, as the Buddha wanted the Dhamma to be spread far and wide, freely, and certainly not sold (case in point: it says right on the back of the book that it’s for free distribution and not to be sold), and with the book they included fifteen (15!) free DVDs on various aspects of Buddhism. I personally strive to follow the Buddha’s teachings, by which phrase I mean something different from the myriad (and often conflicting) things termed “Buddhism” these days, and may not wind up being interested in what these DVDs have to offer, but I’ll certainly have a look at them before deciding that.
At any rate, what the Amitabha Buddhist Society is doing here seems to me to be well in the spirit of what the Buddha taught, and I’m grateful to them and will be adding their contact information to my address book and checking out their website and so on.
