In Sweden and Norway, a troll cross is cut or carved on an object, or above a door or window, to deter trolls and evil spirits from entering and harming people or property. It can also be a piece of iron worn as an amulet to defend against dark magic.
The troll cross presumably goes back to an ancient folk custom that is widespread in large parts of Scandinavia. It is said that troll crosses made of iron were carved over front doors, windows, and barn gates to defend people, livestock, and houses from trolls, evil magic, ghosts, diseases, and all kinds of other dangers.
Because of its shape, the troll cross is sometimes linked with the Odal or Othala rune from the Elder Futhark (the oldest runic alphabet), which stands for estate and heritage/inheritance.
