What Mythologis is
A tertiary reference work. We read primary mythological texts, read them against modern academic commentary, and write back out in plain English. Every article carries a list of references at the bottom, with translator and edition named where applicable.
What Mythologis is NOT
- A religious site. We describe living and historical traditions without endorsing or refuting any of them.
- A peer-reviewed academic publication. Cite us for context, not for primary research.
- Personal opinion. Where a scholarly debate exists, we describe the debate. Where the evidence is thin, we say so.
Sources we trust
For each tradition we prefer the standard scholarly translations:
- Greek + Roman: Loeb Classical Library, West, Wender, Powell, Hard's "Routledge Handbook of Greek Mythology."
- Norse: Faulkes (Snorri), Larrington (Poetic Edda), Lindow's "Norse Mythology."
- Egyptian: Faulkner (Pyramid Texts, Book of the Dead), Allen, Wilkinson.
- Mesopotamian: Foster, George (Gilgamesh), Kramer.
- Hindu: Doniger, Goldman (Ramayana), Bhagavata Purana via Tagare.
- Chinese: Birrell, Strassberg, Yang.
- Mesoamerican: Tedlock (Popol Vuh), León-Portilla, Carrasco.
Sources we avoid
- Anonymous internet summaries.
- AI-generated "encyclopedias" without source citations.
- Devotional retellings that flatten contradictions.
- "Mythology for entrepreneurs" books.
Corrections
If you find a factual error, a mistranslation, a missing translator credit, a wrong date, please email us at [email protected]. Confirmed corrections are applied within 7 days. The article gets a dated update note crediting the corrector.
AI disclosure
This site uses large language model tooling to help draft and edit content. The editorial workflow is:
- A human (usually Peii Henry) picks the topic, the primary sources, and the angle.
- AI tools help draft sections, summarize long passages, and check internal consistency.
- A human reviews every paragraph against the primary source before publish.
We disclose this because it matters. AI tooling is good at structure and bad at primary source fidelity. Our editorial process exists to catch the second part.
