Every coastal culture worships the sea, and every inland culture worships the river. The sea god (Poseidon, Njord, Ryujin, Varuna) is usually older than the storm god in the pantheon, hinting at the priority of seafaring trade. Freshwater deities (the Nile as Hapi, the Ganges as Ganga, the springs of the Greek nymphs) are gentler, tied to fertility and ritual purification.
